Feb. 28 --Guest Critic

Nina Johnson, owner & director of Gallery Diet

Nina will talk about how her education and experience led her to open an art gallery and tell us about the gallery's program.

Then each student will do a short introduction of their practice and present a proposal for the project room OR exterior wall at Gallery Diet.

In return, Nina will do a cold crit of your presentations, websites & project room proposal materials.

This exercise is about putting together concise, eloquent, easy to follow proposal materials and getting a cold read on your website.

What you'll need when Nina visits:

•  Your proposal on a word document
• A statement about your proposed project
• A rendering of the project (one image)
• A detail of the rendering if you'd like
• Links to 3 relevant projects on your website
• Link to your artist's statement (one paragraph)

Next week your website will be an important tool in showing Nina your work/proposals. I will go over 4 ways to make a free website in class (wordpress.com, blogspot.com, tumblr.com and wix.com), as well as a paid option (otheropeoplespixels.com) that is very affordable and versatile. Look at these beforehand and get started if you can.

Notes from the Senior Editor:
Write in your own voice, if it works it works. Begin with a concise summary of the show. Elaborate in the body of the article, probing an aspect of the exhibition until you get to a deeper insight. Then summarize the idea in the conclusion. There is no limit on the amount of words. You can review any exhibition of art or design, any medium including performance, in any type of exhibition setting anywhere in South Florida.

In preparation for the upcoming visit from Nina Johnson, Colin will walk us through Google Sketchup. This is free software,  I suggest bringing your laptop to class tonight and, if you can, install Google Sketchup beforehand.

TED Talks-- January 31

On January 31, each student will give a 10 minute presentation of his or her work, including:

• one overarching theme or idea
• 5 images
• conceptual and material interests
• artists/ movements who influence your work
• a little background info

Practice this presentation, you have to pack it all into ten minutes.

January 24--LegalArt Field Trip

On January 24 we will visit artist Trong Ngueyn's studio at the LegalArt Residency.
Trong will talk about his work and the trajectory of his career.

Trong is an artist, and also a writer/editor for www.artslant.com, a networking site for artists that publishes reviews of shows around the world. He will explain the submission process for writers who wish to review shows on the site.

Each of you will submit a review to Artslant, according to Trong's specifications. First Drafts will be due on Feb. 14, we will edit them in class. Final drafts will be due on the 21st. Hopefully some of you will have your work published on artslant.com.
