4/10 & 4/17 Resources

CV
There are many ways to organize an Artist's CV. It generally starts with the artist's contact info & education background (college and special programs only), followed by a variety of headings appropriate to the artist's exhibition, publication and award history. Headings include Solo Exhibitions, Two Person Exhibitions, Selected Exhibitions, Group Exhibitions, Screenings, Performances, Commissions, Publications, Bibliography, Residencies, Awards and Honors, etc. usually beginning with Solo Exhibitions (if at least 3) or Selected Exhibitions. Notice that the categories and margins make it really easy to skim through these CV's and get the important info at a glance.

Artist Resume Examples:
Jamie Isenstein
Molly Smith

Artist Statement
Examples:
Fabienne Lasserre

Things to think about:
Biographical info (a little, if it's relevant to the themes in your work)
Big ideas you address with your work
Artists/ movements who have influenced you
How the work is made
Description of an important piece and how it fits into your process
Your career/education up to now
Biggest accomplishment as an artist
Something that sets you apart from other artists

Feb. 28 --Guest Critic

Nina Johnson, owner & director of Gallery Diet

Nina will talk about how her education and experience led her to open an art gallery and tell us about the gallery's program.

Then each student will do a short introduction of their practice and present a proposal for the project room OR exterior wall at Gallery Diet.

In return, Nina will do a cold crit of your presentations, websites & project room proposal materials.

This exercise is about putting together concise, eloquent, easy to follow proposal materials and getting a cold read on your website.

What you'll need when Nina visits:
  •  Your proposal on a word document
  • A statement about your proposed project
  • A rendering of the project (one image)
  • A detail of the rendering if you'd like
  • Links to 3 relevant projects on your website
  • Link to your artist's statement (one paragraph)

Feb. 21 Artist's websites (free and paid)

Next week your website will be an important tool in showing Nina your work/proposals. I will go over 4 ways to make a free website in class (wordpress.com, blogspot.com, tumblr.com and wix.com), as well as a paid option (otheropeoplespixels.com) that is very affordable and versatile. Look at these beforehand and get started if you can.

Read this article about the free options.

Come to class with your images, artist's statement and laptop, and be prepared to edit your site or work on your Google Sketchup image & project room proposal.

Artslant Draft Reviews Feb. 14; Google Sketchup intro

We will peer-edit your drafts in class.

Notes from the Senior Editor:
Write in your own voice, if it works it works. Begin with a concise summary of the show. Elaborate in the body of the article, probing an aspect of the exhibition until you get to a deeper insight. Then summarize the idea in the conclusion. There is no limit on the amount of words. You can review any exhibition of art or design, any medium including performance, in any type of exhibition setting anywhere in South Florida.

In preparation for the upcoming visit from Nina Johnson, Colin will walk us through Google Sketchup. This is free software,  I suggest bringing your laptop to class tonight and, if you can, install Google Sketchup beforehand.

Rhizome? Discussion Feb. 7

Read the Introduction to A Thousand Plateaus by Gille Deleuze and Felix Guattari
We will discuss the text in class on the 6th. Each student will be responsible for a particular aspect of this text, I'll assign those once the course enrollment is settled.
